The Island Institute and the Islanded Grid Resource Center hosted the fifth annual Island Energy Conference on Friday, November 7 at the Clarion Hotel in Portland, Maine and Saturday, November 8 on Peaks Island, Maine. The Island Energy Conference brings together island leaders and energy experts to discuss common energy challenges and to learn more about resources that exist to address these challenges. This year’s conference featured a keynote address from Dr. James Manwell from the University of Massachusetts Wind Energy Center, whose pioneering work has included research on the potential to integrate renewable energy into New England island grids. The event also included a kickoff meeting for the Islanded Grid Resource Center at which residents of New England islands and communities in Alaska provided input to inform the priorities of this growing network. More information on the conference as well as presentations and recordings of selected sessions are available at http://www.islandinstitute.org/events/2014-Island-Energy-Conference/16112/.
